Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Unveils Maldivian Heritage Programme
In a bid to showcase the captivating Maldivian heritage, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo has introduced the immersive Maldivian Heritage Programme. This monthly initiative celebrates the diverse traditions and skilled craftsmanship that define the cultural tapestry of the Maldives.
The Maldivian archipelago, with its unique blend of South Asian, Arabian, and African influences, boasts a deep-rooted cultural heritage cherished by its community. The Maldivian Heritage Programme serves as a platform to preserve and promote these customs for future generations.
The program highlights the extraordinary talents of local artisans who specialize in traditional crafts. One such craft is the intricate art of coconut palm weaving, showcased by creating finely woven mats and baskets known as “Thundu Kunaa.” These stunning and versatile creations exhibit the mastery of weaving techniques passed down through generations and serve practical purposes in daily life.
The traditional Maldivian dress, or “Dhivehi Libass,” takes center stage, captivating onlookers with its vibrant colors, sleek designs, and meticulous needlework. It is a testament to the country’s rich heritage and requires at least 15 days to complete. This activity allows guests to gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of this cultural tradition.
Another notable craft featured in the program is the exquisite lacquer work known as “Laajehun.” This meticulous art form involves the application of a glossy lacquer finish on wood or coral, resulting in breathtakingly decorated pieces such as jewelry containers and ornaments. Inspired by the marine life and natural surroundings, these creations showcase vibrant motifs that mesmerize all who behold them.
Furthermore, guests can immerse themselves in the age-old tradition of constructing the iconic Maldivian “Dhoni” boats. Local boat builders, renowned for their skill and precision, meticulously carve these wooden vessels that have been integral to Maldivian life for centuries. With their elegant curves and intricate carvings, these dhonis offer a glimpse into the rich maritime history of the Maldives and its profound connection to the sea.
To celebrate this vibrant cultural heritage and support the exceptional talents of Maldivian artisans, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo has collaborated with the local community in GA. Vilingili to offer the Maldivian Heritage Programme throughout the year. This unique initiative allows guests to engage with local artisans, learn about traditional crafts, and even participate in hands-on workshops, fostering a deeper appreciation for the Maldivian culture.
