Emirates has launched its journey to become the world's first Autism Certified Airline, enhancing accessibility for customers with autism and sensory sensitivities through seamless services and personalized hospitality.
The airline expects to receive the official certification by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) soon after initial training of more than 30,000 crew members and ground staff. In collaboration with IBCCES, a leading organization in autism and neurodiversity training and certification, Emirates underwent a comprehensive review in order to create a welcoming travel experience for all customers. The airline’s certification process includes training at least 80% of customer-facing staff and a commitment to continue further training and improvements. In 2023, 23,000 Emirates staff completed ‘Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities’ training.
Throughout 2025, Emirates will also introduce new standards and services to further improve travel experience for individuals on autism spectrum, their families and companions. This includes introduction of ‘sensory guides’, digital aids developed as part of IBCCES’s audit which empowers travellers to make informed decisions about several environments encountered, and plan what suits their needs and preferences. Another service to expect in 2025 is the introduction of neurodiverse sensory products on flight, such as fidget toys or aids to help focus, reduce self-stimulatory behaviour and de-stress.
With new accessibility standards and services in the pipeline, Emirates will continue improving its airline services, setting a new benchmark for accessibility in aviation. For further information, visit here.
