In preparation for World Ocean Awareness Month in June, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives and Parley for the Ocean Maldives have established a formal collaboration. Through a recently signed Letter of Intent, the two organizations aim to support the tourism industry in the Maldives and raise awareness about the significant threats faced by the ocean.

The collaboration focuses on implementing the Parley AIR Strategy, which encompasses three key pillars: avoiding fossil-based plastics whenever possible, intercepting plastic waste and diverting it from landfills and nature, and redesigning products and materials to promote sustainable living.

Mark Eletr, General Manager of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to be officially collaborating with Parley for the Ocean to keep the crystal clear waters of the Maldives pristine and a safe habitat for our marine life.” He emphasized the resort’s commitment to raising awareness and educating guests about environmental activities, sustainability efforts, and renewable energy usage.

Recognizing the influential role of hotels and resorts, Mark emphasized their responsibility to preserve the natural resources of the destination and mentioned the resort’s plans to intercept plastic waste, participate in island clean-ups, and explore measures to reduce plastic usage. The resort also pledged to engage its team members as ocean ambassadors and foster relationships with nearby communities and schools to promote ocean appreciation.

Executive Director Shaahina Ali from Parley Maldives expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the synergies between Parley and Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives. She emphasized the opportunities arising from the partnership and the promotion of their AIR Tourism program, which utilizes creativity, collaboration, and eco-innovation to address ocean threats.
