Seventh Stop of ‘Savaadheeththa Dhathuru’: GA. Kolamaafushi

‘Savaadheeththa Dhathuru’ is a sailing event organized by the Maldives Integrated Tourism Corporation (MITDC) which invites Yachtsmen from across the globe to participate in a journey across the Maldives seas, making stops at local islands, exploring the heritage, experiencing famous dive sites, sandbanks etc.  The second edition of the rally began on 10th February 2024 from the Kaafu Atoll, taking a course of 3 weeks to reach Gan in Seenu Atoll.

Kolamaafushi, formed by the merging of Maafushi and Kola islands, stands as one of the most secluded inhabited islands within the Huvadhoo Atoll, located 373 kilometers south of the Maldives’ capital. Accessible by a 20-minute speedboat ride, this tiny island in the southwest corner of the atoll is celebrated as a hub for fishing, with its cuisine prominently featuring fish-based delicacies such as the renowned “kandukukulhu” fish curry, prepared using the traditional “huvadhoo havaadhu” curry paste. Visitors also delight in local sweets like the “Huvadhoo bondi.” Diving and spearfishing thrive as popular activities, with two notable dive sites nearby: Hurandhoo Reef to the northwest, boasting vibrant corals and caves, and Hithaadhoo Reef to the southwest, teeming with diverse marine life including giant turtles, manta rays, and whale sharks. Kolamaafushi further entices enthusiasts with its acclaimed surfing and snorkeling spots like Malaim East, Villingili Corner Break, and Kurendhooni Break.

The morning on Kolamaafushi began with a traditional welcome for guests, where the vibrant rhythms of boduberu music fill the air, accompanied by lively dance performances that showcase the island’s rich cultural heritage. Following this spirited introduction, guests had the opportunity to engage in a meaningful activity known as the Coral Project, organized by the island’s youth. Here, visitors explored a dedicated coral nursery, where the community diligently nurtures and cares for these vital marine organisms.

In the evening, the island came alive with the sights and sounds of traditional Maldivian stalls, erected by locals to showcase the unique culture and traditions of Kolamaafushi. Guests were invited to peruse these colorful displays, and were offered insight into the island’s customs, handicrafts, and culinary delights.

As the night fell, guests gathered for a memorable dinner night infused with music. In the youth center, the rhythmic beats of boduberu music resonated through the air, accompanied by other traditional Maldivian tunes that set the stage for an unforgettable evening of dining and entertainment. Guests savored delicious local dishes.

The guests were taken back to their vessels afterwards and the next day of events will be held at GDh. Hoandehdhoo.
