President-elect commits to robust support for tourism expansion

In an address at the Hotelier Maldives GM Forum 2023 held at Bandos Maldives on Thursday, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed a strong commitment to supporting and collaborating with the tourism industry to foster its growth and diversification. This marked his inaugural participation in a tourism-related event following his victory in the presidential election.

During the forum, Dr. Muizzu unveiled his government's ambitious plans to enhance the tourism sector over the next five years. He assured industry leaders of comprehensive cooperation and assistance not only from the Ministry and its affiliated organizations but also from diplomatic missions across the globe.

Among the pivotal initiatives designed to stimulate tourism in the upcoming five years, the following noteworthy strategies have been unveiled:

  1. Initiating discussions with contractors to expedite the construction of the new terminal at Velana International Airport, with the aim of opening it in time for next year's tourism season.

  2. Expanding the operations of the national airline and introducing long-range wide-body aircraft to increase tourist arrivals.


Dr. Muizzu stressed the imperative to diversify the tourism offerings, recognizing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, evolving market dynamics, and global security concerns as a catalyst for action. He emphasized the industry's collective effort to maintain the Maldives' standing as a leader in the tourism market.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Muizzu reiterated the resolute commitment of the new government to engage with and support all endeavors aimed at elevating Maldivian tourism to new heights.
