Elite Marine biology innovation: Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fenfushi

This peculiar largest lagoon in Maldives is located at Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi, located on the western rim of Shaviyani Atoll gains fame for their tranquil teal vistas across the Indian Ocean that continuously laps at the shoreline of pearly white sand. Whilst being certified by Green Globe in 2021, the resort has been re-certified for its exceptional standard of sustainable tourism with noteworthy contributions to marine biology.

 

Sustainability Lab Project

Launched in February 2022, one of a kind in the archipelago transforming and repurposing plastic waste into charming souvenirs for guests, useful education equipment, and unique and appealing furniture.

Fairmont contributes to this project by announcing their mission to fully recycle all plastic waste from their resort.

It has already made a difference by

  • Recycling over 3,720 kg of plastic into different products into:

-Marine animal shaped luggage tags

-School rulers

-Plant boards

-Beach paddles

-Clip Boards

-Tables, Chairs etc.

  • Recycling glass by separating them via:

– Color and crushing them into 25 mm plastic sheets for tables

 

Fairmont Award Scheme for Schools

Launched in December of 2021, this is a ongoing scheme across 12 schools with countless workshops, educational presentations and activities conducted including beach and reef clean ups.

  • Hosts schools to their resort to show students the workshops by Local Maldivian Sustainability Ambassador.
  • Students receive detailed orientation of Sustainability lab & the entire process
  • First hand demonstrating creative and useful ways to recycle waste to children.

Marine Conservation: The Coralarium & Turtle Rangers

  • Is made using PH neutral non-toxic compounds that contain no harmful pollutants to marine life
  • Catches vital biomass on its structure to help coral growth
  • Result of 5 years underwater reveals Coralarium covered in new live coral

120 variety of fish species and marine life consider it a perfect habitat space

Fairmont also released The Turtle Rangers Programme back in January 2022, where guest get educated on the endangered species via a marine biologist. This Programme was launched to spread awareness of biggest problem for turtles worldwide is the large quantity of plastic and ghost nets polluting the ocean.

-Guests can join snorkel tours to collect photo ID Data of turtles

-Partnered with Olive Ridley project, an NGO based in Maldives focusing on turtle research

  •  A variety of conservation tasks are conducted such as:

  -Nest protection

  -Baby turtle release and rescue missions

  -Photo ID tracking to monitor migration and lifestyle patterns

  • In the last 18 months, the resort has released over 800 baby turtles born on their beaches.
