A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Connection

The 30^th Anniversary evening was a vibrant showcase of Maldivian cultural heritage. Guests explored a Walk of Legacy photo exhibition reflecting the resort’s journey since the Grand Opening on 23 September 1995, before immersing in traditional artistry at the local corner Vabbin Fannu — including traditional Thundu Kunaa reed weaving, Liye Laajehun lacquerware, Kasabu Viyun embroidery, and the proud traditions of local fishing heritage. The evening also featured a Styrofoam workshop by local resident artist, transforming discarded materials into meaningful art, alongside the captivating soulful rhythms of Bodu Beru and cultural dances that brought the island’s stories to life.

In a defining moment, Banyan Tree’s founders and honoured guests came together to unveil the fire signage rising from the ocean — “The Legacy Continues.” It was a proud declaration that the spirit of sustainability, wellbeing, and community will be carried forward with renewed strength, and preserved for generations to come.

The 30^th anniversary marks a defining chapter in Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru’s legacy — a year of meaningful celebrations introducing wellbeing and sustainability initiatives, local community empowerment and recognition by prestigious awards. 

• Launch of Banyan Tree Connections: A brand-new wellbeing programme designed for two to foster meaningful connections through culture, nature, and community with a two-night or three-night package. Read more.
• National Community Clean-Up: On the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup Day, in partnership with international and national NGOs, the resort united nationwide islands and thousands of participants under the tagline “One Nation. One Ocean. One Hour.” Together, thousands of plastic trash were collected.
• Partnership with Maldives National University: Also in September, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru signed a pioneering          Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maldives National University with a Marine Foundational Course Programme, empowering outstanding Maldivian students to pursue careers in marine science through hands-on trainings at the resort’s marine lab during one year. This partnership merges the resources of a world-class luxury eco-resort with the academic excellence of the nation’s leading university, creating a living laboratory in the heart of the Indian Ocean.

Through this groundbreaking partnership, Banyan Tree Maldives and MNU are setting a regional precedent for sustainable, mutually beneficial collaborations between the private sector and academia, demonstrating how eco-tourism can directly contribute to the advancement of science, education, and conservation in the Maldives.

• Recognition at SATA 2025: The resort was recognised as the Leading Eco-Resort in South Asia at the SATA South Asian Travel Awards, reaffirming its position as a pioneer in sustainable luxury destination in the region.
• Celebrating Long-Serving Associates: At the heart of this milestone was a celebration of Banyan Tree’s greatest treasure — its people. Many associates have been part of Vabbinfaru since 1995, carrying its sanctuary spirit for three decades. Deputy General Manager Mohamed Naeem who began his journey before the resort officially opened, shared “Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru transformed associate welfare in the Maldives, pioneering associate leave every three months, along with training and benefits that set industry standards. This culture of genuine care fostered loyalty, making Banyan Tree among the nation’s most preferred employers for three decades.”
