Built with sensitivity and care, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives was designed to preserve as much of its native landscape as possible. The island’s architectural footprint is delicately integrated into its surroundings, with minimal disturbance to existing trees and flora-allowing nature to take center stage.

A Resilience-Based Approach to Coral Restoration

In partnership with Euro-Divers Maldives, Alila Kothaifaru proudly announces its ongoing Coral Restoration Programme, designed to enhance reef health through a resilience-based approach. Rising ocean temperatures and environmental stressors pose growing threats to the Maldives’ coral ecosystems, but the resort’s house reef is fighting back, one coral at a time.

The multi-phase restoration initiative involves: Coral relocation, Reef star deployment and Nursery development.

Focusing on resilient species such as Pocillopora, Acropora, and Montipora, the project aims to strengthen biodiversity and restore complex reef structures. Activities are aligned with seasonal heat trends and use naturally sourced coral fragments, ensuring minimal ecological disruption. Monitoring protocols include coral health assessments and growth tracking, while risks are mitigated through strategic site selection and routine maintenance. As part of the program, both guests and staff are invited to engage in reef restoration activities, fostering awareness and hands-on conservation.

“We are not only preserving the beauty of the Maldives for future generations-we are actively rebuilding it,” said Thomas Weber, General Manager of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives. “Our commitment to sustainability is more than a promise; it’s a daily practice that begins with our reef and extends to every corner of our operations.”

In celebration of the World Environment Day 2025, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives is proud to share its progress on circularity and waste reduction. Aligned with its commitment to sustainability, the resort employs a solar power system to generate electricity, significantly reducing fuel consumption from traditional generators. Operational practices such as running laundry services during daylight hours maximize the use of solar energy. Environmental monitoring tools like the Eco Track report help manage and reduce waste effectively. Sewage treatment is managed through an SBR system, recycling water for irrigation in the resort’s gardens. Through the Conserve program, linens are changed every third day unless guests request otherwise, and guests can opt to reuse towels by leaving them hanging, promoting resource conservation.

Alila Kothaifaru is dedicated to achieving zero landfill waste by employing a combination of glass crushing and compacting, incineration, organic shredding, and food composting, the latter producing natural fertilizer for the gardens. Single-use plastics are minimized throughout the resort. Purified drinking water is produced on-site through a reverse osmosis system and served in reusable glass bottles, while bathroom amenities are provided in large refillable containers to further reduce plastic waste.

Its food philosophy emphasizes sourcing ingredients that support the health of people, communities, and the planet. Seafood is responsibly procured from sustainable local suppliers, while organic produce is purchased locally or regionally whenever possible. Menus across all restaurants and bars feature plant-based and plant-forward options to encourage mindful eating. To minimize food waste, à la carte options are favored, with breakfast offered as a semi-buffet complemented by à la carte main dishes.

The resort’s environmental initiatives also include regular beach clean-ups, tree planting, marine awareness talks, and staff training, creating a culture of responsibility that extends from the heart of the resort to every guest interaction.

“Sustainability is not a department-it’s a mindset. Every team member and every guest is part of this journey,” said Jamal Ahmed, Resort Manager, “From coral nurseries to compost bins, every initiative is a step toward a more mindful way of experiencing paradise."
