Amila Handunwala Elected as Marriott Representative and Executive Board Member of MATI

Marriott International has announced that Amila Handunwala, Chairman of the Marriott Maldives Business Council and General Manager of W Maldives, has been elected as Marriott Representative and Executive Board Member of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI). This appointment, confirmed during MATI’s 35th Annual General Meeting on February 9, 2025, further reinforces his leadership in shaping the future of the Maldivian hospitality industry. Amila will serve in this capacity through February 2026.

Championing Sustainability and Industry Collaboration

With nearly two decades of experience in luxury hospitality, Amila has been instrumental in driving innovation in resort management and sustainability. Under his leadership, W Maldives has undergone a bold transformation, integrating eco-friendly initiatives such as a bio-gas plant, reaffirming his commitment to sustainable operations. In a previous role, he spearheaded the transition to a 100% single-use plastic-free environment, setting a benchmark for responsible hospitality in the region.

As part of MATI’s executive leadership, Amila will advocate for a regulatory framework that upholds industry best practices, fostering greater collaboration among stakeholders to drive a strong and sustainable future for Maldivian tourism.
