The Maldives was named the most popular travel destination by The World Travel Monitor® by IPK International in 2022. The Destination Performance Index (DPI) evaluated whether travelers were satisfied with their trip, would recommend it to others, and would return. The Maldives ranked first, followed by Dubai and Cyprus.

According to the survey, vacations were the primary purpose of travel in 2022, comprising 70% of the market share. Among holiday travelers, sun and beach trips were the most popular, with a 90% increase from the previous year, accounting for 35% of the market share.

Although the average duration of international trips remained similar to pre-pandemic times, the average travel expenses increased. Travelers spent more due to inflation and reduced availability of flights and services, despite their income remaining stable.

The IPK surveys predict that the global tourism industry’s positive growth and recovery will continue in 2023, with outbound travel figures for 2019 being attainable for most source markets and travel destinations. The results indicate that there is an uninterrupted desire for international travel in 2023.
