Savaadheeththa Dhathuru 2024 Crosses the Zero Degree Channel

On the 25th of February 2024, a remarkable feat of human endurance and exploration took place as participants of the Savaadheeththa Dhathuru 2024 expedition successfully crossed the Zero Degree Channel. This challenging endeavor brought together adventurers from across the globe to traverse the frigid waters of this iconic maritime boundary within the Maldives.

The Savaadheeththa Dhathuru is an annual expedition that aims to promote tourism diversification which includes Local Island Tourism, Nautical Tourism, and Culture, Heritage and Sustainable Tourism. Organized by Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC) with the help of governmental bodies, and local councils as well as communities, the event serves as a platform for understanding the potential of Nautical Tourism in the Maldives and its challenges whilst also highlighting the beauty of local islands.

The Zero Degree Channel is an important maritime passage located in the Maldives. It lies along the equator, hence the name “Zero Degree Channel.” This channel separates the Huvadhu Atoll to the north from the Addu Atoll to the south.

As the participants returned to shore, their hearts full of memories and their minds filled with new discoveries, they left behind a legacy of inspiration and hope. The journey may have ended, but its impact will resonate far beyond the shores of the Zero Degree Channel.
