Featuring Saifullah Shareef: Captain at TMA
Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in aviation, particularly your journey to becoming a pilot at TMA?
My aviation journey started at the age of 16, following my O levels, when an opportune introductory flight at Addu Flying School kindled an abiding passion within me. Through the years, I’ve been fortunate to gather invaluable experiences where I had the privilege of honing my skills and deepening my understanding of Seaplane operations. The transition to flying ATR further enriched my expertise and gave me more perspective in the IFR world as well. Navigating the challenges brought about by the pandemic tested my resilience, and during this time, my commitment to aviation persevered. A welcome opportunity to return to TMA’s seaplane flying not only reignited my spirit but also reinforced my belief in aviation’s transformative power. Guided by this journey—marked by both exhilarating first flights and pandemic-induced uncertainties—I am inspired to continue this path with unyielding dedication, hoping to continue to learn as a pilot and master this field.
Could you describe a typical day in the life of a TMA seaplane pilot? How does this differ from the experience of pilots in more conventional aviation roles?
A typical day as a TMA seaplane pilot begins with a 4 am wake-up call, emphasizing the dedication demanded by our role. We arrive at base an hour before sunrise to conduct preflight checks, a crucial step in ensuring the safety and readiness of the aircraft. Day VFR operations mean we can only take to the skies after sunrise, typically around 6 am.
What sets TMA seaplane pilots apart is the multifaceted nature of our responsibilities, which include handling operational challenges such as the weather or environmental challenges. Our flights involve confronting weather conditions and environmental factors up close, demanding precise-decision making and adaptability. The role also involves managing operational and logistical pressures, making quick decisions whilst prioritizing safety and passenger experience through collaborative efforts of various operational teams, and navigating complex considerations to ensure a harmonious journey.
In essence, being a TMA seaplane pilot combines meticulous preparation, swift decision-making, and a commitment to passenger safety. This unique blend of challenges and responsibilities, supported by collective efforts throughout the aviation ecosystem, sets us apart from conventional aviation. Each day reminds us of the privilege and responsibility of being at the helm of such a unique and impactful aviation experience, made possible by the concerted efforts of all involved.

What is the most awe-inspiring view you’ve seen from the cockpit while flying for TMA, and how did it make you feel as a pilot?
I encountered a sight of sheer beauty and surreal wonder while flying over the breathtaking Maldivian atolls: a majestic school of manta rays gliding with elegance over a tranquil lagoon. Responding instinctively, I gently descended to share this ethereal scene with my passengers. As the rays danced beneath the crystal clear waters, I felt a deep connection to the natural world. The privilege of facilitating a shared moment of awe left a mark, reminding me of the extraordinary honor it is to witness nature’s marvels from the skies. This experience crystallizes the immense beauty and privilege of piloting for TMA, where each flight holds the promise of extraordinary connections between nature’s wonders and human aspirations.
If you could fly anywhere, real, or fictional, where would you go, and what adventure do you imagine having there?
I would navigate Scandinavia’s rugged mountains. The thrill of flying through freezing temperatures and the challenge of skiing on snowy terrain will be an adventurous journey, having to rely on adaptability and skill to conquer nature’s tests, punctuated by exhilarating maneuvers, combining technical prowess and sheer exhilaration inherent in flying.
Witnessing the captivating Northern Lights would be the ultimate fantasy- to be suspended amidst nature’s luminescent splendor that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy would be a privilege, and witnessing the ethereal ribbons of color would fuel my sense of wonder and reinforce the limitless magic of aviation.
This flight embodies my passion for aviation, highlighting uncharted horizons where exploration and artistry converge. It would resoundingly remind me that, as aviators, our journeys transcend the terrestrial and embrace limitless realms of imagination.
