Flor De Caña
The event brought Robb Scott, the Flor De Caña APAC Brand Ambassador, into the limelight as he stepped onto the stage to initiate the launch. He was joined by his colleague, Edward James, contributing an additional level of knowledge and enthusiasm to the event. The story of the rum goes back to its founder, Alfredo Canessa, who built a rum distillery at the base of the San Cristobal volcano. Now, 133 years later, the brand stands strong in its fifth generation, remaining a cherished family-owned enterprise.
The distillery is located at the active volcano site, ensuring that the surrounding land and water are enriched with minerals, which are said to play a major role in shaping the rum's unique and smooth flavor. The brand's rums are aged in white oak barrels, some over 80 years old, giving the spirit a distinct flavor profile. Dry plantain leaves are used to seal the top and bottom of these barrels to maintain the liquid volume.
When it comes to top-notch rum, Flor de Caña stands out not just for its rich history but also for its commitment to quality and sustainability. It is worth noting that Flor de Caña is the world's only Fair Trade-certified and carbon-neutral liquor producer, meeting over 300 strict regulations.
With a strong focus on reforestation, the brand has planted over 50,000 trees around the distillery to offset its carbon footprint and has achieved its goal of planting 1 million trees this year.
Additionally, the brand's sugar cane fields are its own, and it puts biowaste to good use as a source of renewable energy. Wastewater from the fermentation process is collected and sent to a fizzy drink company where it is used to carbonate their beverages. Moreover, the brand provides educational opportunities and medical services to the surrounding communities, further showcasing their commitment to social responsibility.
Flor de Caña has earned over 200 international awards and recognitions in the last 10 years, including the “World’s Best Rum Distillery” by the International Rum Conference in 2019 and “Global Rum Producer of the Year” by the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2017. While Flor de Caña rums are exceptional when sipped neat, they also shine in cocktails. From classic rum and cokes to more elaborate concoctions, the brand's diverse range of flavors makes it a versatile choice for mixology enthusiasts and bartenders worldwide.
A journey through the Flor de Caña range is a journey through the heart and soul of Nicaraguan rum-making excellence. And we are thrilled to have it gracing the enchanting shores of the Maldives.
