India once again tops Maldives tourists arrival markets

Halfway through 2022, India continues to be the most popular tourist destination in the Maldives. The Ministry of Tourism reported this in its most recent weekly data, which were released on Friday. As a response, the ministry has disclosed that, despite Russia’s previous position as the top source market for Maldives tourism, India has once again surpassed Russia as the top tourist market, accounting for 14.3 percent of total arrivals as of June 8, with a total of 104,800 arrivals. The United Kingdom ranks in second with 90,394 arrivals, accounting for 12.3% of the total. Russia came in third with 70,212 visitors, accounting for 9.6% of the total. Ukraine has previously been listed among the top ten markets for Maldives tourism, however it has now been replaced. Due to the continuing conflict in Ukraine, arrivals have been declining.

The other 7 in the list of Top 10 Tourist Arrival Markets for Maldives are Germany, Italy, United States, France, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, and Austria.

According to statistics, the Maldives has welcomed a total of 732,884 tourists during its Golden Jubilee Year of tourism. As a result, the number of visitors increased by 56.5 percent from January 1 to June 8 this year, compared to the same time in 2021. However, this is a 6.2 percent decrease from the previous year’s data.

In January, 131,764 tourists arrived, followed by 149,008 arrivals in February, 150,739 arrivals in March, and 145,280 arrivals in April. The Maldives received 125,522 tourists in May. So far in June, 30,562 people have arrived. This figure represents an increase of 118.2 percent when compared to arrivals in 2021, but a decline of 3.9 percent when compared to the same period in 2019.

Tourists are staying in the Maldives for an average of 8 days this year, according to the figures, with daily arrivals remaining steady at 4,603 per day. The current month’s daily average stands at 3,820.

It’s been 50 years since intrepid explorers visited the Maldives, which has enticed visitors for years with its stunning splendor.

In 2022, the Maldives will celebrate 50 years since the tourism sector began in 1972.

The Maldives received 555,494 tourist arrivals in 2020, a significant decrease from the previous year’s 1,702,887 visits. In late December, the Maldives met its tourist arrival target for 2021, welcoming a total of 1,321,932 visitors at the end of the year.

In his inaugural address on February 3, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the Maldives hopes to welcome 1.6 million tourists this year.
