The new runway at Velana International Airport has been put to use as a taxi way finally after it was inaugurated in the year 2018, where Etihad Airways A380 jet made history with the first ever landing of the world’s largest passenger airliner in the island nation.
After the Trans Maldivian Airways terminal area is removed the runway will be operational to use for takeoff and landing only. Along with these changes Velana International Airport will have the ability to accommodate 16 arrivals leading to doubling their current accommodation capacity. Maldives Airports Company Limited has informed that when they start using the new runway as a taxiway it will make operations at the airport easier.
