Maldivian has successfully completed its inaugural nonstop flight connecting the Maldives and Australia, with the airline’s first-ever direct service arriving in Melbourne. The achievement represents a major development for the country’s national carrier while also strengthening long-haul access to the Maldives for international travellers.
The journey was operated by Maldivian’s Airbus A330 aircraft, which departed from the Maldives on Sunday evening before landing in Melbourne after the historic route launch. According to the airline, the occasion marks a significant chapter in the carrier’s ongoing growth and international expansion.
By introducing a direct connection between Maldives and Melbourne, the new route eliminates the need for layovers that travellers previously faced when flying through transit hubs such as Singapore, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, or Colombo. These indirect journeys often stretched between 15 and 20 hours or more, depending on stopover times and connections.

Developed in collaboration with Luxury Escapes, the newly launched service shortens overall travel time to approximately 11 hours, offering a far more seamless travel experience for passengers. The route has also been strategically introduced ahead of Australia’s peak summer holiday season, when overseas travel demand traditionally increases.
The once-weekly service is operated using Maldivian’s wide-body Airbus A330, featuring a cabin layout that includes 18 fully reclining business class seats alongside 246 seats in economy class.

For the Maldives’ tourism sector, the launch creates a more accessible gateway for Australian visitors, particularly from a market where long travel durations and complicated transit routes can often impact holiday decisions. For Maldivian, the successful debut of the Melbourne service further demonstrates the airline’s ambitions to expand its global footprint through the use of long-haul wide-body operations.
