With this appointment, Ameen becomes the third individual to oversee the tourism portfolio under the current administration. Ibrahim Faisal was initially appointed to the role in November 2023. In February 2025, the government merged the tourism ministry with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, forming the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, which was led by Thoriq Ibrahim until his resignation on Tuesday.

The latest development places both tourism and civil aviation under a single portfolio, bringing together two closely interconnected sectors. This alignment reflects the critical role of air connectivity in supporting the Maldives’ tourism industry, particularly in facilitating international arrivals and domestic transfers to resorts.

Ameen brings prior experience in the aviation sector to the role. Before joining the cabinet, he held senior positions at Island Aviation Services and has maintained close involvement with transport and civil aviation matters throughout his tenure in government.
