With a career spanning over 35 years, two Michelin-starred restaurants to his name, and a familiar presence on British television, Purnell’s residency promises an energetic, personality-driven celebration of flavour.  From 3-6 April, his confident, ingredient-led approach will be showcased through a curated programme including a signature tasting dinner, an intimate cooking class, and a finale experience hosted at the resort’s The Whale Bar, offering guests the opportunity to engage with the chef’s craft in an informal, immersive setting.

Purnell’s culinary journey began at just 14 years old with a hotel kitchen work placement, before honing his skills at the Metropole Hotel and the acclaimed Simpson’s Restaurant, where he played a pivotal role in securing its Michelin star. His training includes time spent working alongside leading chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes and Claude Bosi, as well as experience in Michelin-starred kitchens across Europe. Rising to prominence through his Birmingham restaurants, Purnell made history by earning the city’s first Michelin star for Jessica’s in 2005, followed by a Michelin star for Purnell’s from 2009 to the present day.

A familiar and much-loved face on British television, Purnell has twice won Great British Menu, later returning as a mentor, and has appeared on programmes including Saturday Kitchen and co-presented My Kitchen Rules UK alongside Rachel Allen on Channel 4.

Known for combining technical precision with warmth and personality, Purnell’s residency is a natural addition to the St. Regis Maldives’ 2026 Tastemaker Series, a carefully curated programme celebrating leading international talent through storytelling and meaningful guest experiences. His philosophy of championing local, responsibly sourced produce and sustainable practices aligns seamlessly with the St. Regis Maldives’ commitment to thoughtful luxury and culinary excellence.
