Hanimaadhoo International Airport was officially inaugurated on 9th November 2025. The development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport marks a transformative milestone for the Maldives, symbolizing the progress and aspirations of the northern region.
The airport was inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held in front of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport terminal. The event was attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Special Envoy and Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, along with senior officials from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates the airport.
Hanimaadhoo airport first began operation as a domestic airport in 1986 and was upgraded to international status in February 2012. Developed by India’s JMC, the USD 136.6 million project commenced in January 2022 and represents a cornerstone in the nation’s aviation development.
Hanimaadhoo International Airport, financed through an Indian line of credit and developed by Kalpataru projects, is among the largest airport infrastructure developments in the Maldives and the airport now serves as the largest airport in the northern region.
Completed after three years of construction, the project stands as a catalyst for regional connectivity and economic growth. The upgraded airport features a 2,465-metre runway, capable of accommodating large code C aircraft such as Boeing 737s and Airbus 320s. Its expansive apron can handle up to nine aircrafts simultaneously. Including three Airbus and six ATR aircrafts, alongside a modern cargo terminal, and a fully equipped air traffic control tower. A duty-free lounge, a fuel farm, and a jetty for seaplane operation were also constructed.
Spanning 10,380 square metres the terminal building is thoughtfully designed to separate domestic and international operations. The first floor caters to domestic flights, while the upper levels serve international passengers, each with two boarding gates. Hanimaadhoo International Airport also introduces a first for atolls: the aerobridge, which will enhance passenger comfort and accessibility.
Reflecting the natural beauty of Maldives through its architectural design, the airport is built to handle 1.3 million passengers annually.
