The Maldives is set to transform its maritime transport with the introduction of Candela P-12 electric hydrofossil vessels, marking a significant step toward sustainable, low emission travel in the Maldives. Swedish maritime technology company Candela AB will supply 10 P-12 vessels to Maldivian operator Ego Shuttle, with operations expected to begin in 2026.

The vessels use hydrofoil technology to lift approximately 1.5 metres above the water, reducing drag and achieving up to 80% lower energy consumption compared with conventional speedboats. This innovation offers a quieter, smoother, and more environmentally friendly mode of transport, well-suited to the Maldives delicate marine ecosystem.

Ego Shuttle CEO Shabir Waliji stated “The P-12 vessels represent the viable solution for electrifying waterborne transport in the region, offering the range and speed required to replace conventional fossil-fuel boats while reducing environmental impact”.

The design of the P-12 places passenger comfort at the forefront. Travelers can enjoy onboard Wi-Fi, entertainment screens, and refreshments, ensuring a premium experience while moving between Velana International Airport and neighbouring islands. To support local expertise, Ego Shuttle plans to set up a maintenance and operations outlet in the Maldives, training local staff in the management and upkeep of the fleet and fostering skills development alongside innovative marine engineering.

The introduction of the P-12 hydrofoil fleet aligns with the Maldives broader environmental goals, including the pursuit of net-zero emissions by 2030. By combining electric propulsion with hydrofoil technology, the vessels provide a low-emission, efficient alternative for island transportation. Modernizing the nation’s marine infrastructure while protecting its fragile marine environment. This initiative positions the Maldives as a model for sustainable, forward-looking island transport.
