As part of its 30th Anniversary campaign, Experience the Original Maldives in Barefoot Eco Sustainable Luxury, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru led the nationwide “Saafu Kuramaa” National Coastal Cleanup Day initiative, uniting over 3,000 volunteers from 32 islands across the country. Together, an impressive 25 tonnes of waste was collected — a remarkable milestone that underscores the power of collective action in protecting the Maldives’ fragile ecosystems.

The campaign — a collaboration with CLEAN Maldives and supported by key national and international partners — marks the widest community coastal cleanup ever led by a private sector organisation in the Maldives, reaffirming Banyan Tree’s enduring ethos of Embracing the Environment, Empowering People.

“Saafu Kuramaa,” meaning “Let’s Clean Together” in Dhivehi, brought together resorts, NGOs, schools, and local councils across the archipelago for one shared purpose: to safeguard the ocean that sustains Maldivian life and livelihood.

In addition to CLEAN Maldives, the initiative received valuable support from UNICEF, Parley for the Oceans, Ripple, Malé City Council, WAMCO, MTCC, CEN PRO, and Dhagandu Hardware — demonstrating the collective power of partnership in action.

“As we celebrate Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru’s 30th year of legacy, witnessing such unity and shared purpose among communities across the Maldives is profoundly inspiring,” said Elias Pertoft, General Manager of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Dhawa Ihuru. “When communities come together with purpose, we renew our bond with nature and strengthen the path toward a more sustainable tomorrow.”

Saafu Kuramaa reflects a shared commitment to protect the Maldives we all cherish, and to keep its beauty thriving for generations to come.
