Royal Island participated in the Baani Event that set a Guinness World Record for the most people snorkelling simultaneously. Twenty-eight participants represented Royal Island at Villingilifaru Finolhu, the site located approximately 2 km across the lagoon from the resort. The island sits within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll and is within easy reach of Hanifaru Bay, one of the Maldives’ most celebrated manta aggregation sites.
Participation complements ongoing coral restoration on Royal Island’s house reef. Work includes nursery frames, out-planting of resilient coral fragments, routine monitoring, and concise guest briefings that promote reef-safe habits such as calm entries, mindful finning, and respectful distance from marine life. These practical measures help turn Maldives snorkelling into a low-impact, high-awareness experience while supporting long-term reef health.
Stewardship also extends to neighbouring communities. Recent contributions include native tree and coastal-vegetation planting that supports shoreline stability and biodiversity, along with periodic beach and lagoon clean-ups delivered with local partners. School and youth touchpoints introduce ocean literacy and encourage a culture of everyday guardianship across Baa Atoll.
Set against clear lagoons and vibrant coral gardens, Royal Island’s record-day participation highlights a simple message: enjoy the Maldives responsibly, protect the coral ecosystem, and strengthen community ties. The island continues to align sustainable tourism, marine conservation, and local collaboration in one of the world’s most remarkable marine landscapes.
