With over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Siraj has shaped a career grounded in dedication, adaptability, and an unwavering people-first philosophy. From his early days at Makunudu Island Resort to international exposure in New Zealand and senior roles across the Maldives, his journey reflects a deep-rooted passion for service and guest experience.

At Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, Siraj’s leadership has elevated the resort’s reputation as a pioneer of eco-conscious luxury while preserving its signature barefoot charm. His approach blends operational excellence with a genuine connection to people and place, guided by empathy, empowerment, and open communication.

“Great service ultimately starts behind the scenes with an inspired and driven staff, which I work to develop every day” says Siraj.

One of his key initiatives has been the customised renovation of guest villas, incorporating guest feedback and traditional Maldivian design with sustainable materials. The result is a collection of spaces that feel authentic, serene, and deeply connected to nature - intentionally free from over-digitisation to maintain the peaceful, unplugged essence of the island.

Guests now enjoy more privacy, improved ventilation, open-air bathrooms, and handcrafted touches, all while remaining immersed in the natural beauty of the island.

Under his guidance, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu has retained its title as Maldives’ Leading Green Resort at the World Travel Awards, including 2023, 2024, and 2025, with multiple sustainability awards recognising the resort’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. Among its standout initiatives is the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre, the first and only veterinary-run sea turtle clinic in the Maldives, in partnership with the Olive Ridley Project. The centre offers vital care and rehabilitation for injured sea turtles, while educating guests on marine conservation.

The resort also champions coral restoration efforts, led by a resident Marine Educator, as well as an on-site organic garden that supplies fresh produce to the kitchen and spa. Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu has eliminated all single-use plastics since 2018, manages organic waste on-island through composting, and supports local communities through outreach and education. “Our sustainability journey is successful because it is a culture rather than a trend” says Siraj. It’s embedded in everything the island does, from daily operations to the guest journey.

Looking ahead, Siraj envisions a future where Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu continues to lead with purpose. While remaining true to their identity, authenticity, and care for the environment the island is set to evolve thoughtfully.

For young professionals aspiring to follow a similar path, Siraj offers timeless advice: “Remain curious, humble, and never lose sight of the guest experience. Concentrate on both your team and your guests, and most importantly lead by example. Hard work, sensitivity, and consistency will get you further than titles ever would”.
