Velana International Airport has officially opened the first lounge at the airport, marking a key milestone in the airport's development project.
The “Koveli” lounge was opened at Terminal 1, offering an elevated travel experience for departing passengers. The lounge was inaugurated at a ceremony held at VIA, by the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, alongside Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL’s) CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lam’aan and Mujthaba Latheef, and the companies senior management.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Saeed emphasised that though tourism remains as the driving force of the nation, VIA plays an important role in sustaining the Maldives economy and the airports stand as the bedrock supporting all related industries. He also praised MACL staff for their service, describing their contribution as “a great national duty” that helps elevate the nation’s image and economic strength.
Velana International Airport commenced on July 26 2025. Situated on the second floor of terminal 1, the “Koveli” lounge covers 1,230 square meters and can accommodate up to 270 passengers at a time. The space has been designed with comfort and modern convenience in mind, featuring a children’s play area, dedicated buffet section, shower facilities, baby care facilities, and specially equipped rooms for passengers with special needs.
The new terminal was designed and developed to serve up to 7 million people per year. With 47 check-in counters, 6 self-service counters, 20 departure immigration counters, 6 passenger boarding gates, and 12 aero bridges.
Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef mentioned that the timely completion of the lounge underscores the administration's commitment to improving visitor services and reinforcing the Maldives, standing as a leading global destination.
MACL noted that the launch of the “Koveli” lounge demonstrates its dedication to providing world-class facilities at the country’s main international getaway.
