What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey evolved over the years?

Growing up in a Ski resort in the Swiss Alps, I was always intrigued by tourism and its global reach. Having started after secondary school with a chef’s apprenticeship at Hotel Pardenn in Klosters Switzerland, I gained international hospitality experience spanning more than 35 years, including F&B and management roles with luxury hotels in Switzerland, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya, India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives.

I took up my first general manager post at Kurland Hotel and Polo Club in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, subsequently moving into the same role with Mövenpick Jeddah Al Nawras in Saudi Arabia, Mövenpick Hotel & Spa Bangalore in India, and Oberwaid in St Gallen, Switzerland. 

My journey in the Maldives began in 2016 as Regional General Manager for Diamonds Athuruga and Thudufushi Maldives, adding Sandies Bathala Maldives to my responsibilities in 2018. I then joined Dusit Thani Maldives in 2019 for three years, followed by Alila Kothaifaru Maldives in 2022.

Can you share some of the significant changes you have witnessed in the luxury hospitality sector throughout your career and how you have adapted to the evolving trends and guest preferences?

One significant change has been the shift towards self-centric, more personalized, and immersive guest experiences. Guests now seek unique, bespoke experiences rather than just luxury amenities. In response, we’ve integrated more local culture into our offerings and embraced technology to enhance personalization. For example, at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, we use guest data extensively to tailor experiences and offer custom excursions. Additionally, sustainability has become a crucial focus, and we’ve adapted by truly implementing eco-friendly practices and promoting responsible tourism.

If I weren’t in hospitality, I might have pursued a life within the tourism industry, probably in the airline industry.
