Angsana Velavaru has embraced February with an inspiring focus on social responsibility and sustainability. In recognition of World Cancer Day, the resort hosted a series of impactful events designed to raise awareness, advocate, and support local communities.
The resort’s celebration began with a spirited Fun Run/ Walk, bringing together guests and associates to raise awareness for cancer. Led by the Angsana Medical Team, this event not only promoted physical well- being but also encourage collective action for a cause that affects millions globally. The day was filled with energy, unity, and a shared commitment to supporting cancer research and advocacy.
In line with its dedication to community development, the following day saw Angsana Velavaru join hands with Rinbudhoo Island to inaugurate a new computer lab at the local school. This initiative supported by the Banyan Group’s Greater Good Grant under Banyan Group Foundation, aligns with the resort’s ongoing efforts to contribute educations and infrastructure in the local communities, providing students with vital tools for a brighter future.
This project directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4: Quality Education, by expanding access to digital learning tools, and SDG 9: Industry innovation, and Infrastructure, through the enhancement of technological resources in schools. With digital skills now essential for over 90% of global job opportunities, this project plays a pivotal role in cultivating digital literacy among students, preparing them with the expertise necessary for success in both academia and their future careers.
Aligned with Banyan Group’s value of Embracing the Environment, Empowering People, this endeavour not only supports educational advancement but also champions the importance of digital literacy in shaping a sustainable and innovative future for all.
To celebrate Banyan Group’s 30th anniversary, the Greater Good Grants was introduced through the Banyan Global Foundation to support sustainability and community engagement initiatives, with Angsana Velavaru taking a leading role in driving sustainability efforts. Proceeds from the resort’s Green Imperative Fund (GIF) — an initiative enabling guests to contribute USD 1 per night — are dedicated to biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and community empowerment. In alignment with its commitment to responsible hospitality, the resort matches each guest’s contribution dollar for dollar, effectively doubling the resources allocated to these sustainability efforts.
General Manager, Ahmed Zahir, shared, “This month events reflect our commitment to meaningful, positive change. The Green Imperative Fund is a vital part of our approach, supporting initiatives that benefit both the environment and the communities we serve. Its inspiring to witness how our team and guests come together to make a lasting impact.”
The funds are directed towards waste reduction, renewable energy initiatives, ecosystem preservation, and community development. While the contribution varies each year based on the group’s financial performance, it remains a cornerstone of Angsana Velavaru’s sustainability efforts.
Through these initiatives, Angsana Velavaru continues to demonstrate that genuine value lies in the positive impact it creates, both for its guests and the wider community. This February, the resort has once again reinforced its dedication to environmental and social responsibility, advancing its mission to protect the natural beauty of the Maldives while fostering opportunities for local communities to thrive.
