1. With over 15 years in the Maldivian tourism industry, you must have spearheaded many innovations. What would you consider the greatest innovation you’ve introduced?
I’ve always believed that true innovation in the tourism industry is never the result of a single individual’s effort. It’s about collaboration, especially when working in a multicultural environment like the Maldives. Every voice matters when introducing something new, and that collective input is what drives successful innovation.
One of the standout innovations that I was part of was reshaping the surf experience at Lohis in the Maldives. Initially, surfing was available to everyone at the resort, but over time, we recognized the potential to elevate this into a more specialized offering. We developed the Lohis Surfing Package, which is unique not just in the Maldives but globally. We crafted an experience that wasn’t only for the surfer but also for their families and non-surfing companions. This "surf village" concept allows for a holistic surf experience that caters to enthusiasts and provides an ultimate holiday experience for everyone involved. This innovation created a niche within the surfing community, making it more than just a sport but a full-fledged vacation experience.
Another pioneering initiative we introduced was the 24-hour Premium All-Inclusive concept for four-star properties. Traditionally, all-inclusive packages in the Maldives were quite basic, often limited to standard alcohol brands and restrictive dining options. We saw a gap in the market, particularly for the four-star segment, where guests were increasingly seeking a more premium, all-inclusive experience. By introducing the 24-hour Premium All-Inclusive model, we provided guests with access to premium beverage brands, a dine-around concept, and a host of value additions that weren’t available before. This concept was the first of its kind in the Maldives, offering guests a higher level of service and luxury, without the price tag of a five-star resort.
Even at Heritance Aarah, we continue to push boundaries. At Aitken Spence, we don’t just follow market trends; we aim to set them. Each of these innovations was a team effort, where we collectively understood the evolving needs of our guests and delivered something that redefined the experience they could expect from the Maldives.
2. In your extensive career in the Maldivian tourism industry, how have your values and philosophy influenced your approach to leading sales and marketing at Heritance Aarah?
Throughout my career, I’ve always believed that true leadership comes from humility. To lead a team effectively, especially one as diverse as ours, it’s essential to stay grounded and foster a collaborative environment. At Heritance Aarah, we have a multicultural sales team with representatives spread across continents, each bringing their unique perspective and expertise to the table.
One of the core values I hold dear is the importance of providing equal opportunities. We believe in developing local talent and giving everyone in the team the exposure they need to grow, both professionally and personally. Whether it's sending a new team member to an international market or allowing them to take the lead on key projects, we ensure that everyone has a platform to shine. This isn’t just about business growth. It’s about building future leaders from within, especially in a destination like the Maldives, where nurturing local talent is critical to the sustainability of the industry.
What I truly enjoy is how my team often challenges me. It’s a dynamic where I don’t just lead them, but they push me to stay ahead, to think creatively, and to constantly innovate. That healthy tension drives us all to strive for excellence. At the end of the day, leadership, for me, is not about dictating from the top but empowering each individual to realize their potential, which, in turn, strengthens the whole organization.
3. Who or what have been the key influences in your career, and how have they helped shape your professional journey?
There have been several pivotal influences in my life that have profoundly shaped my career. First and foremost, my parents and the teachers at St. Peter's College in Colombo played an essential role in laying the foundation of my character and work ethic. They instilled values of discipline, perseverance, and humility, which have been invaluable throughout my journey.
However, the most significant influence in my career has been my wife. Her unwavering support and the peaceful, stress-free environment she creates have allowed me to fully focus on my work with a clear mind. The sacrifices she has made for my career are immeasurable, and her understanding and encouragement have been fundamental in every achievement I’ve had.
I’ve also had the privilege of working with exceptional leaders throughout my career. Early on, several senior figures within the company recognized my potential and provided me with opportunities that pushed me to grow. I was entrusted with key responsibilities at a young age, which not only accelerated my professional development but also allowed me to mature into the role I am in today. For that, I am deeply grateful.
Lastly, I believe that more than talent, it’s your spiritual beliefs that guide you on the right path. I’ve always felt that being grounded in these values has been instrumental in attracting the right influences and associations throughout my career. It’s difficult to list all the names because I’ve been fortunate enough to work with many inspiring individuals who have had a hand in my success.
4. Heritance Aarah is celebrated for its seamless blend of Maldivian tradition and modern luxury. Could you share your involvement in the resort's design and conception?
When we embarked on the journey to create Heritance Aarah, we recognized that we were entering a challenging and competitive market. We took a step back to analyze the landscape and identify gaps that existed within the Maldivian hospitality sector. While many resorts were focusing on luxury experiences, we found that few were offering authentic local experiences that truly reflected the rich culture and heritage of the Maldives.
With the Heritance brand's DNA centered around heritage and inheritance, our guiding slogan became “Where Tradition is Alive.” This philosophy drove every decision we made during the resort's design and conception. From the architecture to the decor, we aimed to create an environment that not only exuded modern luxury but also celebrated the essence of Maldivian culture.
Our commitment to this vision extended to how we present ourselves as representatives of the resort. At trade shows and industry events, our team proudly wears traditional Maldivian attire, marking us as the first resort chain to embrace this practice. We believe that this visible commitment to our roots reinforces our brand identity and fosters a deeper connection with our guests.
To enhance the local experience, we curated a range of cultural activities for our guests, from traditional Maldivian dance performances to cooking classes featuring authentic recipes passed down through generations. One of our proudest achievements was developing a lacquer-painted corporate gift that we give to our partners, showcasing local craftsmanship and artistry.
It’s gratifying to see that our initiatives have inspired other resorts to follow suit and incorporate local experiences into their offerings. By highlighting the beauty of Maldivian culture alongside modern luxury, we not only differentiate ourselves but also contribute to preserving our heritage for future generations. At Heritance Aarah, we’re not just creating a resort; we’re telling a story one that connects our guests to the vibrant culture of the Maldives.
5. In a competitive luxury market, how does Heritance Aarah differentiate itself in terms of guest experience and unique offerings?
At Heritance Aarah, we strive to redefine luxury by offering a distinctly personalized and immersive experience that resonates with our guests on multiple levels. One of the key pillars of our differentiation lies in our culinary offerings. We are proud to be recognized as a premier culinary destination in the Maldives, having won the Most Outstanding Culinary Organization Award twice. Our culinary team has also demonstrated exceptional skill and creativity, bringing home 13 medals from prestigious events like the Culinary World Cup and Culinary Olympics. This commitment to culinary excellence allows us to provide our guests with extraordinary dining experiences that celebrate both local flavors and global cuisines.
In addition to our culinary prowess, we focus on creating unique moments that elevate the guest experience. From private dining on secluded beaches to bespoke wellness programs, every aspect of our service is designed to cater to the individual preferences of our guests. We believe that these tailored experiences foster deeper connections between our guests and the breathtaking surroundings of the Maldives.
Moreover, our commitment to sustainability and community engagement further distinguishes us in the luxury market. We actively involve our guests in local initiatives, giving them a sense of purpose and connection during their stay. By supporting local artisans and engaging in eco-friendly practices, we not only enhance the guest experience but also contribute to the preservation of the beautiful environment that surrounds us.
At Heritance Aarah, we are dedicated to creating a holistic experience that goes beyond mere luxury one that engages the senses, nourishes the spirit, and fosters a meaningful connection to the rich culture and natural beauty of the Maldives.
6. What are some of the most significant challenges you face in the luxury tourism market, and what strategies are you employing to address these challenges effectively?
One of the most significant challenges we face in the luxury tourism market is differentiation in a rapidly evolving landscape. The Maldives has long set the benchmark for innovation and luxury experiences, and as competition intensifies, maintaining a unique offering becomes increasingly difficult. Coupled with this is the rapid pace of technological advancement, which continuously reshapes guest expectations and preferences.
To address these challenges, we have adopted a multi-faceted approach:
Continuous Innovation: We prioritize innovation in our offerings by regularly evaluating market trends and guest feedback. This proactive approach allows us to introduce fresh concepts that resonate with our clientele.
Tailored Experiences: Understanding that luxury travelers seek personalized experiences, we focus on customization at every touchpoint. By leveraging guest data and insights, we curate unique itineraries that reflect individual interests, whether that’s private excursions, wellness retreats, or culinary adventures. This level of personalization not only sets us apart but also fosters deeper connections with our guests.
Sustainability and Authenticity: Today’s luxury travelers are increasingly conscious of sustainability and the cultural impact of their travels. At Heritance Aarah, we are committed to sustainable practices and community engagement, which resonate with eco-conscious travelers. By offering authentic local experiences and showcasing Maldivian culture, we create meaningful interactions that enrich our guests’ stays.
Investment in Talent: We believe that our people are our greatest asset. We invest in the continuous training and development of our team, ensuring they are equipped to deliver exceptional service and anticipate guest needs. This focus on talent not only enhances the guest experience but also fosters a culture of innovation and excellence within our organization.
Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborating with local artisans, chefs, and cultural ambassadors allows us to infuse authenticity into our offerings. By building strong partnerships within the community, we can provide guests with unique experiences that highlight the rich heritage of the Maldives.
In conclusion, while the luxury tourism market presents its share of challenges, our commitment to innovation, personalization, sustainability, and community engagement positions Heritance Aarah as a leader in delivering unparalleled guest experiences. We embrace change and continuously seek ways to elevate our offerings, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of luxury hospitality in the Maldives.
7. Sustainability is a key focus in tourism today, and Heritance Aarah has made strides in this area. How do you ensure your sustainability initiatives are not just resort-driven but also involve and benefit the local Maldivian communities? (share an example of a successful community-led project?)
At Heritance Aarah, we recognize that true sustainability extends beyond the boundaries of our resort; it must encompass and uplift the local communities that surround us. Our sustainability initiatives are carefully designed to be inclusive, ensuring that they benefit both our guests and the Maldivian people. Here’s how we achieve this:
Local Sourcing: We prioritize purchasing goods and services from local markets, supporting local farmers, fishermen, and artisans. This not only strengthens the local economy but also ensures that our guests enjoy authentic Maldivian experiences. By integrating local products into our culinary offerings and resort amenities, we create a direct link between our operations and the community.
Community Engagement Programs: We actively involve local communities in our sustainability initiatives. For example, we organize workshops and training sessions to educate community members about sustainable practices and eco-friendly farming techniques. These initiatives empower locals to adopt sustainable methods, thereby enhancing their livelihoods and fostering a sense of ownership over their natural resources.
Collaborative Conservation Efforts: We partner with local NGOs and environmental organizations to undertake conservation projects that benefit both the environment and the community. This includes marine conservation efforts, such as coral reef restoration and marine biodiversity monitoring. By involving local fishermen and residents in these projects, we create a sense of shared responsibility for preserving the Maldives' unique ecosystems.
Cultural Heritage Preservation: Understanding the importance of cultural heritage, we integrate local traditions and customs into our guest experiences. The resort features a live Maldivian Village Museum which gives a glimpse into the traditional Maldivian way of life. This not only enriches our guests' stays but also promotes appreciation for Maldivian culture among visitors. We host cultural events, craft workshops, and traditional cooking classes that engage local artisans, ensuring they benefit directly from tourism.
Investment in Education and Capacity Building: We are committed to supporting local education initiatives. By collaborating with local schools, we provide resources, training, and scholarships to students pursuing careers in hospitality and tourism. This investment in education empowers the next generation, enabling them to participate meaningfully in the industry and ensuring the long-term sustainability of tourism in the Maldives.
Guest Participation: We invite our guests to take part in our sustainability initiatives through hands-on activities such as beach clean-ups, tree planting, and local community projects. This engagement not only fosters a deeper connection between our guests and the Maldivian culture but also reinforces the idea that their travel choices can make a positive impact.
At Heritance Aarah, we believe that sustainability is a shared journey. By collaborating with local communities and creating opportunities for mutual growth, we strive to ensure that our initiatives are impactful and sustainable, contributing to the well-being of both the environment and the people of the Maldives. This holistic approach not only enhances our guests’ experiences but also ensures that tourism becomes a force for good in the communities we touch.
8. Does Heritance Aarah have any exciting or secret plans in the pipeline that you can share with us?
Absolutely, we have several exciting projects in the pipeline at Heritance Aarah! While I must keep the specifics under wraps until their official launch, I can assure you that these initiatives are designed to significantly enhance our guests’ experiences and further our commitment to sustainability.
One area we’re focusing on is the introduction of innovative wellness programs. We recognize that wellness is becoming an increasingly important aspect of luxury travel, and we’re committed to creating offerings that not only rejuvenate the body but also nourish the soul. These programs will incorporate local traditions, natural elements, and sustainable practices, ensuring a holistic approach to wellness.
Moreover, we are always exploring how we can innovate and elevate the guest experience. Our team is continuously brainstorming new ideas and concepts that align with the evolving desires of our guests. Stay tuned for what’s to come!
9. Adaaran properties are renowned for being family-friendly, and as a family man yourself, how do you envision the future of travel for the next generation, and what values do you hope to instill in your children (or grandchildren) about exploring the world?
As a family, we believe that travel is one of the most profound forms of education for our children. It opens their eyes to the beauty of diverse cultures, the importance of environmental stewardship, and the significance of forging connections across borders. I envision a future where travel not only becomes more sustainable but also serves as a vehicle for personal growth and understanding.
In my family, we prioritize experiences that enrich our lives. I hope to instill in my children the values of curiosity and respect for the world around them. I want them to appreciate the stories behind each destination and the people they encounter, understanding that every culture has its unique perspective and wisdom to offer.
Moreover, I believe it's crucial to teach them about environmental responsibility. As we explore various places, we must also recognize our role in preserving the natural beauty and resources of those destinations. This means practicing sustainable tourism and leaving the places we visit better than we found them.
Ultimately, I hope my children will view travel as an opportunity to create meaningful connections and a chance to contribute positively to the communities they visit. By nurturing these values, I trust they will grow into compassionate global citizens who embrace the world with open hearts and minds, continuing a legacy of exploration and respect for generations to come.
10. If you could create a personal mantra that captures your life philosophy in just a few words, what would it be?
"Believe, Empower, Evolve."
This mantra embodies my core beliefs and guides my journey both personally and professionally. "Believe" reflects the importance of having unwavering faith in myself and my team. It’s about recognizing our potential and embracing challenges with confidence.
"Empower" emphasizes the significance of collaboration and uplifting those around me. I believe that when individuals feel valued and supported, they can achieve incredible things together.
Lastly, "Evolve" speaks to the necessity of pushing boundaries and embracing change. In a dynamic industry like tourism, continuous growth and innovation are vital. This mantra serves as a constant reminder that success comes from believing in ourselves, empowering one another, and always striving to evolve into something greater.
