The opening of the highly anticipated international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been rescheduled for July 2025, following advice from the Airline Operators Committee (AOC). The AOC's recommendation aims to ensure a smooth and disruption-free experience for travelers once the terminal is fully operational.
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) revealed that the new terminal is 85% complete. While portions of the terminal may be ready for use before the end of the year, the AOC advised against a premature opening, emphasizing the importance of addressing any technical issues before welcoming passengers.
MACL’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, explained, “Although part of the terminal is technically ready, the AOC recommended delaying the full opening to ensure all technical details are finalized for a seamless launch.”
The new terminal is a vital project designed to increase the airport’s capacity and enhance the passenger experience. Once finished, it will significantly improve the airport's ability to handle the growing number of tourists visiting the Maldives, reinforcing the country's status as a premier global destination.
The AOC, which represents the airlines operating in the Maldives, has played a crucial role in advising MACL to delay the terminal’s opening. Their input ensures that the facility meets the highest standards of operational quality and safety.
With the revised timeline, the terminal is set to be fully operational by mid-2025, just in time for the busy tourism season. The additional time will allow MACL to address any remaining technical concerns, ensuring the terminal provides a seamless, enhanced travel experience for all visitors.
